Holiday Travel Tips

One of my favorite memories growing up was our family road trip to Grandma’s for the holidays and I always loved when it snowed on our journey! But now that I have a family of my own, that snow doesn’t have the same magical effect it once had one me. Now it makes me think about safety and worry about icy roads so let’s be sure our vehicle is ready for winter weather road trips. Thanks to Jiffy Lube, here’s four helpful Holiday Travel Tips to help prepare you!

Tip Number 1...Let it Flow. Check all of the fluid levels in your vehicle. Each fluid plays a key role in ensuring optimal longevity as well as maintaining proper efficiency so check fluid vitals such as motor oil, coolant, transmission fluid and windshield wiper fluid. Plan ahead of your trip to have your fluids inspected, topped off or exchanged as recommended by your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Did you know that engine oil is critical protection during cold weather starts? In simple terms, cold weather can cause motor oil to flow either too slowly or not at all – potentially taking a toll on the engine. Also choosing the right oil can make a big difference. Again, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for proper motor oil recommendations.

Tip Number 2...Maintain a Clear View. Winter weather can be really dangerous. I’ve driven my vehicle in a complete white out before and let me tell you, I’m glad all my lights were working properly! And you know, our vehicles have a lot more lights than we might think. So to make sure your vehicle is visible to other drivers and that you have a clear view of where you’re going, double check your headlights, taillights, turn signals, parking lights and even your license plate lights. Replacing bulbs is usually really easy and inexpensive to do- so put new ones in if yours are burned out or if they’re just really hazy. And if your drive to Grandma’s house is a long one, you’ll be glad to have lots of strong illumination at night!

Tip Number 3….Check your battery. Cold weather places significant strain on your vehicle’s starting charging system. Have your battery tested before hitting the road so you don’t get stranded.

Tip Number 4…Keep Rolling! The tires on our cars are important so let’s keep them rolling with the proper air pressure! And remember, tire pressure in a tire typically goes down 1-2 pounds for every 10 degrees of temperature change. The result? When a tire is under inflated or over inflated, it negatively affects handling, cornering and stopping. And, eventually, the tire will begin to wear unevenly…shorting the life of the tire and costing you money on a replacement. So, check the owner’s manual or the decal found in the door jamb or glove compartment for the recommended air pressure. Proper tire inflation ensures optimal performance and life of the tire.
